Sam Darnold is anticipated to replace Geno Smith as the team’s new starter, thus the Seattle Seahawks fully revamped their quarterback room this offseason. The Seahawks’ QB1 position is not the only one that has altered.

Behind Darnold, Seattle entirely redesigned the position group. Jalen Milroe was selected in the third round by the Seahawks, who want to use the youngster in a few schemes this season.

Seattle then traded Sam Howell to create place for Milroe’s relocation to the Pacific Northwest. The Seahawks also welcomed back a familiar face by signing Drew Lock after the veteran spent 2024 with the New York Giants.

Even though the Seahawks selected Milroe with a high draft pick, not everyone is certain that the playmaker will be selected as Darnold’s backup. Cameron Van Til of Seattle Sports provided an early prediction for the Seahawks’ ultimate 53-man roster. According to the expert, Lock will replace Milroe as the Seahawks’ backup quarterback.

Let’s look at the Lock v. Milroe argument.

The Seahawks Predicted to Name Drew Lock as the Backup Quarterback Over Jalen Milroe

How Seahawks rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe can become best in class

It would still be surprising if Lock is selected as the backup over Milroe, considering that Seattle used a third-round selection on the signal-caller, but even if Milroe is not officially the backup, Seattle may still use the quarterback in select packages as intended.

In an article titled “An early Seahawks 53-man roster projection for 2025,” published May 26, 2025, Van Til stated that “this is the most clear-cut position group on offense, at least in terms of who makes the 53-man roster.” “Darnold is the likely starter and will try to continue on his impressive Minnesota performance from the previous year. Given his 28 career starts, including two with Seattle in 2023, Lock is expected to be the backup.

Milroe is the major X-factor since he is probably a multi-year developmental project when he joins the NFL. Will the Seahawks deploy him as a change-of-pace weapon in specialty packages given his alluring running skill set? Would he improve as a passer enough to replace Lock as the backup in the first season? It will be exciting to follow those plots in fall.

Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald: ‘Sam’s Going to Take, by Far & Away, Over 90% of Our Snaps’

Little is known about the Seahawks’ quarterbacking scheme this season, apart from Darnold being the team’s starter. Because of this, it’s especially fascinating to watch how the quarterbacks perform during training camp.

Although the Seahawks have implied that Milroe would play early, the youngster must demonstrate that he is prepared for snaps. Darnold is expected to receive over 90% of the snaps this season, according to Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald.

On April 26, Macdonald told reporters, “There will always be an urgency in how we’re developing our players and how we’re training them.” And Jalen will be there with all of the others.

However, Sam will undoubtedly take more than 90% of our photos this year. But if Jalen merits and merits the opportunity to go out there, we will.
