The Los Angeles Angels may finally have legitimate reasons to believe that a turnaround is beginning to take shape.
While the club’s overall record has not yet reflected a championship-caliber team, several developments have changed the outlook in Anaheim. The arrival of Stan Kroenke as the incoming owner has created expectations of greater spending, while the draft and trade deadline have significantly strengthened an Angels farm system that had struggled for years.
More importantly, several young players are beginning to establish themselves at the major-league level.
That leaves the organization with an important question: Which players should be considered untouchable as the Angels attempt to build their next contender?
Based on the current young talent in the organization, these five players could form the foundation of the next great Angels team.
1. Reid Detmers — Starting Pitcher
Reid Detmers may be one of the most important decisions facing the Angels.
The 27-year-old left-hander has dramatically increased his value during an outstanding second half of the season. That could make him attractive to other teams, potentially allowing Los Angeles to bring back a significant return in a trade.
However, moving Detmers could also push the Angels’ rebuilding timeline further into the future.
Los Angeles has spent years searching for a true frontline starter, and Detmers now has an opportunity to become that pitcher. With two years of team control remaining, the Angels could instead use their expected financial flexibility to pursue a long-term extension.
Keeping him could prove more valuable than cashing in at his highest trade value.
2. Zach Neto — Shortstop
Zach Neto has not necessarily taken the massive statistical leap some expected, but that does not make him any less important to the Angels’ future.
Neto posted a 117 wRC+ in both 2024 and 2025 and entered September with a 116 mark in 2026. Those numbers demonstrate consistent offensive production from one of the most valuable positions on the diamond.
The 25-year-old has also come remarkably close to reaching the 30-homer, 30-steal combination.
Whether Neto eventually becomes the centerpiece of the lineup or an important supporting star, having a productive shortstop under team control gives the Angels an extremely valuable building block.
3. Walbert Urena — Starting Pitcher
Perhaps the most surprising development of the Angels’ season has been the emergence of Walbert Urena.
At the beginning of 2026, Urena was not viewed as one of the organization’s premier prospects. Months later, the 22-year-old is on the verge of making franchise history.
Urena is positioned to become the first Angels rookie since Jered Weaver in 2006 to finish his debut season with an ERA below 2.90 and at least 100 strikeouts.
That type of production at such a young age changes the Angels’ long-term outlook.
If Urena continues developing alongside Detmers, Los Angeles could suddenly have the makings of a formidable rotation built around two young left-handed starters.
4. Samy Natera Jr. — Relief Pitcher
Every contender needs a dominant bullpen, and Samy Natera Jr. could become one of the Angels’ most valuable relief pieces.
The 26-year-old left-hander has produced eye-catching numbers, including a 37.9% strikeout rate, a 1.83 FIP and a 2.35 ERA across 30⅔ innings.
His 1.1 fWAR also highlights just how much value he has generated in a relatively small workload.
High-strikeout left-handed relievers are difficult to find, making Natera an especially intriguing piece for the Angels.
Although Ben Joyce remains another important bullpen name, Natera’s performance gives Los Angeles another potential long-term weapon.
5. Wade Meckler — Outfielder
Wade Meckler might be the boldest selection, but his profile is exactly why winning teams need players like him.
The outfielder does not rely on overwhelming power. Instead, he contributes through contact, getting on base, running the bases effectively and providing dependable defense.
Meckler was acquired as a waiver claim in January and has subsequently produced a 120 wRC+ despite a slugging percentage below .400.
Those aren’t necessarily the numbers that dominate headlines, but they can be extremely valuable over the course of a long season.
Every championship-caliber roster needs players who consistently make winning contributions without necessarily receiving the most attention.
The Angels’ Foundation Is Taking Shape
The Angels still have plenty of work to do before they can legitimately be considered contenders.
But the organization’s outlook is beginning to change.
Detmers and Urena could potentially anchor the rotation. Neto gives the club a young player at a premium position, while Natera could become an important bullpen weapon. Meckler provides the type of versatile roster piece that every successful team needs.
The Angels also have a developing farm system and, potentially, significantly greater financial resources under Kroenke.
The next challenge will be determining which young players should be retained and which could be used as trade pieces to accelerate the rebuild.
If the Angels make the right decisions, these five players could become part of the foundation of a very different team in Anaheim.
