The Toronto Blue Jays’ outfield situation underwent a major transformation at the trade deadline, leaving the club with a significant question mark in center field following the departure of Daulton Varsho.

Varsho, once viewed as a potential long-term answer in center while preparing for free agency this winter, was traded to the Houston Astros on August 3 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti. The deal brought an end to his four-year stint in Toronto and left the Blue Jays searching for both an immediate replacement and a potential long-term solution at the position.

That uncertainty makes Toronto’s latest minor-league acquisition particularly intriguing, as the organization may have added another potential candidate to its evolving center-field picture.

Earlier this week, the Blue Jays added 23-year-old Canadian outfielder David Calabrese after he was released by the Los Angeles Angels, according to the official minor-league transaction log. Calabrese, a native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, was originally selected by Los Angeles in the third round of the 2020 MLB Draft.

The timing of the move is particularly interesting for Toronto as the organization continues to reshape its outfield depth following Varsho’s departure. The Blue Jays are also weighing their options with Myles Straw while recently promoting Brett Bateman.

Adding Calabrese gives Toronto another athletic outfield option to develop, which could become valuable down the road. There is also uncertainty surrounding Anthony Santander and Addison Barger, both of whom have dealt with injuries, making the Blue Jays’ need for additional outfield depth even more apparent.

“The Blue Jays are most unsettled here, especially if Barger’s recovery takes longer than expected or Santander’s shoulder issues, which derailed his first two seasons with the Blue Jays, aren’t repaired by surgery,” Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi wrote of the outfield picture. “That makes outfield and designated hitter are the easiest areas for the Blue Jays to add the impact so vital to a better offence next year.”

Canadian Outfielder Adds Promising Upside To Toronto Blue Jays Outlook

Calabrese possesses several intriguing tools that make him a worthwhile gamble for Toronto amid the uncertainty surrounding its outfield.

The Canadian outfielder has dealt with durability issues throughout his minor-league career, but his athleticism and defensive versatility have long stood out. Baseball America previously described him as a plus-plus runner capable of playing all three outfield positions, while also noting his patience and ability to drive the ball to all fields. His biggest concerns have been limiting strikeouts and staying healthy.

His offensive production with the Angels’ organization this season was modest, as he hit .222/.292/.335 with four home runs. However, he has already shown some encouraging signs since joining the Blue Jays. Through his first two games in the organization, Calabrese recorded a hit and a walk in seven at-bats while seeing action in both center and right field.

Toronto clearly isn’t expecting an immediate impact. Instead, the Blue Jays appear to be taking a low-risk chance on an athletic young outfielder who could potentially develop into a useful option as the organization searches for its next long-term answer in center field.
