Everton are reportedly keeping tabs on Waterford forward after the 22-year-old delivered an impressive two-goal performance against England Under-21s.

According to TEAMtalk, the Black Cats sent representatives to Turner’s Cross to watch the Republic of Ireland youngster in action during his country’s 3-1 victory over Lee Carsley’s side.

Sunderland were not alone in their interest, with Leeds United, Everton, Brentford and Brighton also reportedly sending scouts to assess the striker’s performance.

His display has further strengthened his growing reputation, with the forward continuing to attract attention following an impressive run of form for club and country.

The Waterford striker scored twice against England Under-21s, finding the net on either side of Conor McManus’ goal as the Republic of Ireland came from behind to secure a place in the European Championship play-offs.

His excellent form has also translated into domestic football, with Lonergan scoring again during Waterford’s 2-0 victory over Bohemians on Friday.

That result secured Waterford a place in the FAI Cup final for the first time in 22 years, providing another significant moment in the club’s season.

Waterford revealed in September that Lonergan had scored 15 goals across all competitions in 2026. His latest cup strike has since taken his tally to 16, underlining his growing importance to the team.

The forward began his career at St Patrick’s Athletic before moving to English club Fleetwood Town in 2024. He subsequently returned to Irish football with Waterford, initially joining on loan before making the move permanent.

His consistent goalscoring has now reportedly attracted interest from several clubs looking to strengthen their attacking options.

Lonergan’s performances have already generated interest within Ireland, with Waterford reportedly turning down an offer worth approximately £152,000 from Derry City earlier this year.

TEAMtalk also reports that several Championship clubs are monitoring the striker ahead of the January transfer window.

Sunderland’s reported scouting mission suggests that the Premier League side are assessing emerging attacking talent as they continue to explore potential recruitment opportunities.

However, there is currently no indication that the Black Cats have submitted an offer for Lonergan or opened formal negotiations with Waterford.

With several English clubs reportedly tracking his development, the 22-year-old could attract further attention if he maintains his impressive scoring record throughout the campaign.

For Sunderland, keeping a close eye on the young forward could provide an opportunity to assess a developing goalscorer before competition for his signature intensifies.

Lonergan’s recent performances for both club and country have certainly raised his profile, and the coming months could prove important in determining the next step in his career.
