Sunderland has reportedly joined Brentford in monitoring Rangers’ brilliant center-back as interest in the highly rated defender continues to grow.
The South African international joined Rangers from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union during the summer transfer window and has quickly established himself as an important member of Derek McInnes’ defensive unit.
His impressive performances have attracted attention from several clubs, with Sunderland and Brentford among the Premier League sides believed to have sent scouts to assess his progress.
Italian and Spanish clubs are also reportedly monitoring the 22-year-old, highlighting his growing reputation since arriving at Ibrox.
However, Rangers are understood to be in a strong position to retain the defender and are under no immediate pressure to consider a sale.
Sunderland and Brentford Step Up Interest in Makhanya
According to Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke, both Sunderland and Brentford had representatives present to watch Makhanya during Rangers’ 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock last weekend.
The defender has made an encouraging start to life in Scotland, quickly becoming an influential figure in McInnes’ team despite joining the club only a few months ago.
O’Rourke reported that Rangers are confident of keeping hold of the South African international over the next 12 months, with his existing contract running until 2030.
That long-term agreement puts the Scottish Premiership club in a favorable negotiating position should interest in the defender intensify.
Rangers are also aware that Makhanya’s market appeal could increase significantly if he maintains his current level of performance. With clubs from several European leagues already keeping tabs on him, further interest could emerge in the coming seasons.
For Sunderland, the reported scouting mission suggests they are continuing to assess potential defensive reinforcements as they look to strengthen their squad for the challenges of Premier League football.
Brentford’s interest adds further competition, although there is currently no indication that either English club has made a formal offer.
McInnes Praises Rangers After Kilmarnock Victory
Rangers head into their next fixture against Dundee following an impressive 3-1 win over Kilmarnock, extending their winning run to seven consecutive matches and keeping them at the top of the league.
Despite the convincing result, McInnes acknowledged that the international break had affected his team’s rhythm, with eight members of his starting XI having travelled to represent their countries.
The Rangers manager explained that he was reluctant to make significant changes because of the team’s excellent form before the match.
McInnes admitted that his side struggled for consistency at certain stages but was pleased with the overall outcome, particularly the three goals scored and the contributions of his forwards.
He also highlighted the chances created after the interval, despite noticing some tiredness among his players.
The manager praised his squad for maintaining their winning momentum despite the disruption caused by international commitments.
With Rangers enjoying a seven-game winning streak and leading the Scottish Premiership, Makhanya’s continued development will be an encouraging sign for the club.
However, the reported interest from Sunderland and Brentford could become a storyline to watch if the defender continues to impress throughout the campaign.
