The Blue Jays’ outfield situation underwent a major transformation at the trade deadline, leaving Toronto with a very different outlook in center field following Daulton Varsho’s departure.
Varsho, who had increasingly looked like the organization’s long-term answer in center and is set to enter free agency this winter, was traded to the Houston Astros on August 3 for right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti. The deal brought an end to his four-year tenure with Toronto and created uncertainty over who will eventually step into the center-field role, especially over the long term.
That uncertainty makes the Blue Jays’ latest minor-league acquisition particularly worth watching.
Toronto Blue Jays Add Intriguing Canadian Outfielder After Trading Daulton Varsho

Earlier this week, the Blue Jays added 23-year-old Canadian outfielder David Calabrese after he was released by the Los Angeles Angels, as noted in the official minor-league transaction log.
A native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Calabrese was originally drafted by the Angels in the third round of the 2020 MLB Draft.
The move comes at an interesting time for Toronto, which is reshaping its outfield depth following Varsho’s departure, while also weighing its options with Myles Straw and recently calling up Brett Bateman.
Toronto could benefit from adding more athleticism to its long-term outfield plans, especially with the futures of Anthony Santander and Addison Barger still uncertain due to ongoing injury concerns.
Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Toronto’s outfield, particularly if Addison Barger’s recovery extends beyond expectations or Anthony Santander continues to deal with the shoulder problems that have limited his first two seasons with the Blue Jays. With those concerns still unresolved, Davidi suggested that the outfield and designated-hitter spots could be the most logical areas for Toronto to pursue impactful offensive additions next season.
Canadian Outfielder Adds Promising Upside To Toronto Blue Jays Outlook
Calabrese possesses several intriguing tools that make him a worthwhile gamble for the Blue Jays as they navigate uncertainty in the outfield.
Baseball America’s Taylor Ward previously described Calabrese as a talented Canadian-born outfielder whose development had been slowed by a persistent hamstring injury, limiting him to 314 games from 2021 through 2024. Ward noted that Calabrese is an elite runner capable of defending all three outfield positions and brings a patient, all-fields approach at the plate. However, he still needs to reduce his strikeout tendencies and prove he can stay healthy. His potential was evident during an instructional league series at Angel Stadium, where he hit two home runs, including one that traveled more than 440 feet, and earned series MVP honors.
Calabrese posted modest numbers in the Angels’ minor-league system this season, batting .222/.292/.335 with four home runs. Since joining the Blue Jays organization, he has collected one hit and one walk in seven at-bats across his first two games while seeing action in both center and right field.
