Sunderland may have endured a frustrating start to the 2026/27 campaign, but their remarkable rise over the past few years should not be overlooked.

Back in 2022, the Black Cats celebrated promotion from League One after defeating their opponents in the play-off final at Wembley. The atmosphere was electric, with thousands of supporters witnessing a significant moment in the club’s history.

Fast-forward four years, and Sunderland are back in the Premier League and competing in Europe. Regis Le Bris deserves enormous credit for overseeing the club’s impressive transformation, with his recruitment strategy playing a crucial role in their progress.

Among the standout additions has been Dutch striker Brian Brobbey, who has quickly established himself as an important figure at the Stadium of Light.

Brian Brobbey Is Proving His Premier League Quality

Following the early termination of Marc Guiu’s loan spell from Chelsea, Sunderland moved quickly to strengthen their attack by signing Brobbey from Ajax for £17.3 million late in the transfer window.

The move initially carried some risk, particularly given the criticism the striker had received from Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman in 2023. At the time, Koeman questioned Brobbey’s finishing ability and first touch.

However, the 24-year-old has made significant progress in England and is beginning to demonstrate why Sunderland was keen to secure his services.

Brobbey finished his first Premier League campaign with seven goals from 22 starts. He has continued that impressive form into the current season, scoring three times in his first five appearances.

All three goals came during Sunderland’s entertaining 5-3 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, where the forward delivered an outstanding individual performance.

His displays at the World Cup also highlighted his growing reputation, with the Dutchman scoring three goals across four appearances during the summer tournament.

Brobbey’s ability to hold off defenders, bring teammates into play, and create opportunities with his back to goal has made him particularly difficult to contain. He is also becoming more productive in front of the goal.

Football pundit Don Goodman has even described him as the Premier League’s best striker when it comes to hold-up play and link-up ability.

Considering the relatively modest transfer fee Sunderland paid, Brobbey is already looking like an excellent piece of business. However, he is not the only player Le Bris and his recruitment team have signed at an outstanding price.

Although Sunderland’s opening six matches of the 2026/27 season have not been entirely convincing, their early struggles should not overshadow the progress they made during their previous Premier League campaign.

Le Bris guided the newly promoted side to an impressive finish that secured qualification for the Europa League. At one point, Sunderland even entertained hopes of reaching the Champions League places.

Alongside Leeds United, the Black Cats challenged expectations by avoiding an immediate return to the Championship after winning promotion.

Their recruitment during the previous summer was instrumental in achieving that success, with DR Congo international Noah Sadiki emerging as one of the club’s most impressive acquisitions.

Sunderland signed the midfielder from Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise for approximately £15 million, and the 21-year-old has quickly established himself as a vital member of Le Bris’ squad.

Sadiki has earned widespread praise for his energetic performances, defensive awareness, and ability to dominate the midfield. His reputation in Belgium had already grown to the extent that he was nicknamed ‘Mini Kante,’ reflecting his combative style and impressive work rate.

During the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, he made 33 starts, adapting remarkably well to English football.

Although he does not regularly contribute goals and assists, his ability to cover ground, win possession, and disrupt opposition attacks makes him an invaluable presence in the center of the pitch.

His defensive statistics this season underline those qualities. Sadiki is averaging two tackles and interceptions per game while being dribbled past just 0.3 times per match.

Importantly, his contribution going forward is also improving. The midfielder is averaging 1.2 key passes per game and has already created two big chances this season. That represents a notable improvement, considering he failed to create a single big chance throughout the entirety of the previous campaign.

Chelsea Among Clubs Monitoring Sadiki

Sadiki has yet to reach his best level this season, with fitness concerns following his World Cup involvement affecting his availability and preparation.

Nevertheless, Sunderland have every reason to be delighted with their decision to bring him to the Stadium of Light.

His impressive performances have attracted attention from rival clubs, with Chelsea among the sides reportedly interested in securing his signature.

Such interest is hardly surprising given the midfielder’s development and the substantial increase in his estimated market value.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Sadiki is currently Sunderland’s most valuable player, ranking ahead of high-profile teammates such as Brobbey.

The valuation places his potential market worth at up to €67 million, equivalent to approximately £57 million.

That represents a remarkable increase from the £15 million Sunderland initially invested in the midfielder.

If Sadiki continues to develop at his current rate, his value could rise even further, while interest from leading Premier League clubs may intensify.

For Sunderland, the signing already looks like a major success. Le Bris and the club’s recruitment team have identified a talented young midfielder whose performances and growing valuation underline the quality of their transfer strategy.

With Brobbey delivering in attack and Sadiki providing energy and control in midfield, Sunderland have secured two players who could prove central to the club’s ambitions in the Premier League and Europe.
