Besiktas was believed to be interested in Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles as they sought to strengthen their defensive line.
Newcastle United are no longer concerned about losing Jamaal Lascelles this transfer window, since Nottingham Forest permitted Joe Worrall to join Besiktas.

This winter, the Turkish giants were looking for a central defender to improve their backline following the early departure of former Manchester United player Eric Bailly. The Ivorian’s contract was terminated in December due to a suspension resulting from a 3-1 loss to Fenerbahce.

His departure sparked rumors that Besiktas will enter the Premier League market after the January transfer window closed last Thursday to sign a centre-back on loan. Turkey’s winter transfer window is an extra week long, thus English clubs would be unable to replace any players that left.

According to reports, Lascelles could come on Besiktas’ radar despite being club captain and playing a key part this season as injuries piled up. Worrall has now joined the Turkish club on loan until the end of the season, easing concerns.

Despite reports linking him with a move, Chronicle Live understands Lascelles was content to remain on Tyneside. Confirmation of the 30-year-old’s stay allows the Magpies to focus on the rest of the season, with the present group continuing until summer.

When asked about Lascelles’ future at St James’ Park last month, manager Eddie Howe said: “I need to know what Jamaal’s contract situation is, but he’s an important part of our future. I’m not sure if he’s out of contract at the end of the season.”
