Newcastle United injuries: Matt Targett is expected to return from injury for the match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
Matt Targett, a Newcastle United defender, might make his long-awaited return from injury against Chelsea on Monday evening (8pm kickoff).

Matt Targett returned to full training this week and is back in contention after missing four months with a hamstring issue. With Kieran Trippier out injured and Lewis Hall ineligible to face his original club, Targett is expected to return to the bench for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

“Matt is working his way back to full fitness,” head coach Eddie Howe told the Gazette. “If we needed him right now, I think he could play, but I think he needs a little more training time.

“That’s not to say he won’t be involved in the game but he’s done well, had a full week of training and is getting closer.”

Targett will be Newcastle’s latest injury boost, following the returns of Joe Willock, Alexander Isak, and Elliot Anderson. While Newcastle had an injury setback last time out against Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Trippier forced off with a calf problem, Tino Livramento, who came off the substitute and scored in the 3-0 win, is expected to come into the team at right-back.

Trippier is expected to miss Newcastle’s next two matches against Chelsea and Manchester City, as well as England’s impending international break. The 33-year-old might return soon after the break, when Newcastle visit West Ham United at St James’ Park on March 30 (12:30pm kickoff).
