Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna was unsurprised by Sheffield Wednesday’s approach in their 6-0 thrashing at Portman Road on Saturday.
The thumping moved the Tractor Boys into second position in the Championship table, with Leeds United hosting Millwall on Sunday. Wednesday’s second defeat in a row, both to title contenders, did not widen a one-point gap on the safety spots.

Owls manager Danny Röhl picked a front-foot starting lineup for the game, with four strikers ahead of two midfielders and four defenders. Ipswich took the lead in the 15th minute and went on to score five more goals on a chastening afternoon for the German relegation scrappers, who will hope to use the international break to recover from their worst league defeat since losing by the same scoreline to Reading in September 2008.

“We saw from the team sheet that they tried to take an aggressive approach,” McKenna said about Wednesday’s setup. “When the team arrived, it wasn’t a tremendous surprise; we had considered it a possibility. They had mentioned that they thought we concluded games stronger than we started, but we believe we start home games quite well.

“Look, they obviously wanted to be very aggressive at the start of the game, as has been the case in all of their games. Today, I thought we were the better team. I still believe they have made some nice improvements and performed admirably, but today it is more about the quality of Ipswich’s performance, to be honest. Many teams would have struggled to beat us today.”
