He’s been in incredible form so far this season.
Newcastle United have failed to replicate last season’s performances, which saw the club enter the Champions League for the first time in almost 20 years.

Eddie Howe’s team has struggled with injuries this season, with players such as Sven Botman and Callum Wilson missing significant amounts of time, causing the club’s league position to deteriorate.

With only eight games remaining until the end of the season, the team is currently a significant distance behind the Premier League’s top four, having experienced a considerable dip in performance from last season.

The Magpies have also struggled to score as many goals this season, with Howe’s team missing quality on both ends due to current injury issues.

They could have kept one former Newcastle youth, though, since the forward has been in excellent form in recent years.

Adam Armstrong’s stats since leaving Newcastle

Adam Armstrong, a forward, had a decent start to his Championship career at Blackburn in 2018/19, scoring five goals and assisted five in his first full season away from St James’.

Armstrong, a former Newcastle teenager, never looked back after his first season at Ewood Park, scoring 16 goals in 46 games to finish joint-sixth in the league.

However, in 2020/21, he scored 28 Championship goals, a total only surpassed by another former Newcastle youngster, Ivan Toney, and Southampton paid £15 million for his services, bringing Armstrong back to the Premier League just three years after his permanent departure from the Magpies.

It’s easy to say he failed to adjust to the demands of the Premier League during his first two seasons at St Mary’s, scoring only four goals in 53 top-flight games.

Despite being relegated at the end of last season, the now 27-year-old is full of confidence, with Armstrong having his greatest season in terms of goal contributions.

This season, in 38 Championship games under Russell Martin, the striker has scored 20 goals and provided 11 assists for his teammates, giving him the most combined goals and assists of any player in the Championship (31).

Adam Armstrong’s market value in 2024

According to Transfermarkt, six years after leaving the Magpies, striker Armstrong now has a market worth of £13.7 million, up 685% from the £1.7 million the club sold him for.

His 73 goals in six seasons would be a tremendous asset to Howe’s team, and the 27-year-old might be a great backup to current Magpies forward Alexander Isak.

The offensive “warrior” praised by Saints manager Martin would easily be a second-choice at St James’. With teammate striker Wilson now 32 and battling with ailments, the club may regret releasing Armstrong at such an early age, especially as the 27-year-old is about to hit his prime.

There’s no denying he’s failed to live up to expectations in the Premier League during his career, but following an outstanding season in the Championship with Southampton, now may be the time for him to make his mark in the world’s finest league.
