The Wildcats have recovered after a disappointing run of failures. After having the best season of his college career, Justin McBride has committed to play for the Cats, adding a high-upside offensive weapon to the roster.

The news was initially reported by UK Sports Network.

Given the likelihood that McBride will start in the starting four when the 2026–27 college basketball season begins, this offers the Wildcats a much-needed addition in the frontcourt.

The portal reality

The elephant in the room must be addressed before we discuss the fit: after starting his career at Oklahoma State, transferring to Nevada, and then moving to James Madison this past season, Kentucky will be McBride’s fourth team in four years.

That used to create serious concerns about the player. However, this is the era of NIL and portals. It will soon become commonplace for children to play for five teams in five years.

In today’s game, gamers will really relocate every year in search of better opportunities, such as more money, more playing time, or even better weather. You must adjust, and Pope is doing just that by acquiring a player that complements what Pope did effectively in Year 1.

The return of the stretch 4

McBride returns to Lexington with a genuine “stretch 4” option. Although Andrew Carr wasn’t very good from deep in the first year, teams had to respect him. The offense was able to move more freely as several passing lanes were made available.

At 6-foot-7, McBride is a little small for the role, but he has a mature, 240-pound build. In order to force opposing bigs to step out of the paint and match his superb shooting on the other end of the floor, he will be expected to use his sheer muscle to hammer in the post and hold his own on defense.
