The New York Mets are set to receive a much-needed boost to their pitching staff with a key injured arm nearing his return to the mound.

The right-hander has begun progressing in his recovery from a right shoulder strain and is expected to return at some point in September. Williams recently restarted his throwing program, giving the Mets renewed optimism that he can contribute before the end of the season.

Williams was placed on the injured list in August after experiencing arm fatigue. Further examination revealed the shoulder strain, forcing the Mets to temporarily shut down one of their most important bullpen pieces.

His return could provide significant help to a Mets pitching staff that has dealt with several injuries throughout the 2026 season. New York has already lost multiple pitchers for extended periods, making the potential return of Williams particularly important as the club enters the final stretch of the season.

The Mets are also scheduled to activate right-hander Justin Hagenman on September 2 after he missed significant time with a fractured rib. Hagenman is expected to start against the Tampa Bay Rays.

While Williams does not yet have a firm return date, his recent throwing progress represents an encouraging development. If he can return healthy and regain his previous form, the Mets could have another reliable option available in high-leverage situations.

For New York, getting key players back from the injured list is becoming increasingly important. The Mets will need every available arm as they navigate the final weeks of the 2026 campaign.

Williams’ eventual return could therefore become one of the biggest late-season boosts for a Mets team hoping to finish the year on a stronger note.
