The Philadelphia Phillies are facing another disappointing season, increasing the pressure on the front office to make significant roster changes this offseason as they attempt to guide their current core back to the World Series.

Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and the team’s entire starting rotation are expected to remain in place. However, several other areas of the roster could undergo major changes, with the outfield standing out as one of Philadelphia’s biggest weaknesses in recent years.

With an upgrade needed, Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer has predicted that the Phillies could strike a deal with the Boston Red Sox, sending reliever to Boston in exchange for Jarren Duran, the All-Star Game MVP.

Rymer believes Philadelphia could pursue Duran as part of its offseason plans, suggesting that a straight-up exchange involving Kerkering could benefit both teams.

Philadelphia president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski previously worked with the Red Sox when the organization selected Duran in the 2018 MLB Draft. That connection could potentially make the outfielder an appealing target for the Phillies.

Duran would offer Philadelphia another option in the outfield, particularly after Brandon Marsh struggled badly during the second half of the 2026 campaign.

Marsh’s production declined significantly after the All-Star break, making him one of the least effective players in the league over that stretch. Although Duran also endured a difficult season, his numbers could still make him an upgrade for the Phillies.

The Boston outfielder recorded just 0.4 bWAR while hitting .207 with 20 home runs and a 76 OPS+ in 2026. Despite those disappointing statistics, Philadelphia could view him as an opportunity to strengthen its outfield without giving up an established everyday player.

Why the Proposed Trade Could Benefit Both Teams

For the Phillies, trading Kerkering could provide an opportunity to move on from a reliever who may benefit from a fresh start elsewhere. A move to Boston could give the right-hander a chance to rebuild his confidence while providing the Red Sox with another bullpen depth option.

However, Boston may demand additional compensation before agreeing to part with Duran. His struggles last season could weaken his trade value, potentially allowing Philadelphia to negotiate a more favorable deal.

Duran’s contractual situation could also influence Boston’s decision. The outfielder remains under team control through the 2028 season, giving the Red Sox a limited window to determine whether he remains part of their long-term plans.

With Philadelphia searching for outfield reinforcements and Boston potentially considering changes to its roster, the two clubs could have reasons to explore a deal.

Although the proposed swap remains speculative, it represents the type of move Dombrowski could consider as he attempts to improve the Phillies’ championship prospects.

If Kerkering can generate enough trade interest to bring back a player of Duran’s caliber, Philadelphia may have a compelling reason to consider the exchange. Whether Boston would accept such a straightforward deal remains uncertain, but the idea highlights a potential opportunity for the Phillies to address one of their most persistent roster weaknesses.
