The New York Yankees could explore an intriguing trade with the Atlanta Braves this offseason, with veteran catcher emerging as a potential target to strengthen their catching depth ahead of the 2027 MLB campaign.
Following another season that ended short of their ultimate goal, the Yankees are expected to evaluate several areas of their roster as they look to build a stronger team for next year. With multiple players potentially entering free agency, New York could have opportunities to reshape its roster through trades and other offseason moves.
According to a trade proposal highlighted by Heavy’s TJ French, the Yankees could approach Atlanta about acquiring the former All-Star catcher who signed a six-year, $73 million contract with the Braves.
Although Murphy’s contract could make the proposed deal complicated, his experience and power-hitting ability could make him an interesting option for a Yankees team looking to provide additional support behind the plate.

The proposed trade would see New York acquire Murphy from Atlanta in exchange for outfield prospect Jace Avina, who ranks No. 24 in the Yankees’ farm system.
The deal would also require the Yankees to assume a portion of Murphy’s remaining contract, although the Braves could potentially be willing to negotiate a financial arrangement to facilitate a trade.
Murphy’s recent injury and availability concerns make the proposal a calculated risk for New York. However, the Yankees would not necessarily need him to serve as their primary catcher or shoulder a significant offensive burden.
Instead, the veteran could provide valuable depth behind Austin Wells while giving manager Aaron Boone another experienced option to manage the demands of a full MLB season.
