Pitcher Cade Horton has been one of the Cubs’ most consistent performances in recent months, but Chicago will be unable to start the rookie against the Padres in the National League wild-card series.
The Cubs have placed Horton on the 15-day disabled list with a right rib fracture, the team announced Saturday afternoon. According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, Horton might return for Game 5 of the NLDS if Chicago advances.

Horton, 24, is 11-4 with a 2.67 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 118 innings this season. Since August 1, he has a 7-3 record, a 1.28 ERA, and 47 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings.

The Cubs will play San Diego in their second-ever postseason game next week, but the site has yet to be confirmed.
This weekend, Chicago will host the Cardinals in a three-game series; Jameson Taillon will start on Saturday, while the starter for Sunday has yet to be selected.
