When the Philadelphia Phillies elected to fire manager Rob Thomson in April, Don Mattingly was the ideal temporary replacement. He became successful in Philadelphia after quitting his position as John Schneider’s bench coach with the Toronto Blue Jays after their World Series performance last season.

Nobody had any idea what was about to happen. The front office, under the direction of Dave Dombrowski, president of baseball operations, moved on from Thomson after the team began the season 9–19. They had to take action after falling into a hole ten games below.500.

Kyle Schwarber: The Red Sox' interest in me began and ended with one Zoom call - masslive.com

April MLB firings are quite uncommon. But when Alex Cora was sacked by the Boston Red Sox in April, Thomson was the second MLB manager let go. They were both unexpected actions. For the Phillies, the decision is proving to be the correct one. Kyle Schwarber, an All-Star outfielder, didn’t hold back when discussing Philadelphia’s rapid recovery under Mattingly.

The Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-0 on Saturday. With the victory, they went 14-4 under Mattingly and won the series for the fifth time in a row. In just three weeks, they have risen from the National League East bottom to second position. Regarding Mattingly, Schwarber didn’t hold back.

“When they make the decision to make the change, you look at Donnie and the resume, that he played at such a high level and managed some good teams,” Schwarber said to the Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham. “He knows what it takes. There were no drastic changes in what we’re doing. We know the group we have and what we’re capable of. We needed to start playing better, no matter who the manager was.”

They have begun to perform better. It is hardly surprising that they won 14 out of 18 games under their new boss. After his playing career, Mattingly gained a great deal of administrative expertise. He has managed the Miami Marlins and Los Angeles Dodgers. He recently surpassed his career’s 900th victory in the dugout. After just eighteen games, Schwarber’s faith in his squad is one thing that has struck him.

“But there will be some different things we’re going to try to do with him at the helm and having faith in us,” Schwarber continued. “He has a lot of faith in us, and we have a lot of faith in him.”

Philadelphia Phillies Making Move Up Standings With Talented Roster

The Phillies’ 9-19 start was upsetting in part because they had talent. The Red Sox signed left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez in free agency. Nonetheless, the nucleus of the team continued to have great success.

Zack Wheeler is one of their seasoned arms, while Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and Trea Turner are position players, so the core is getting older. Over the course of a 162-game season, every team must make hay during certain periods of their schedule. That’s what Philadelphia has done.

Philadelphia is 4.5 games behind the final NL wild-card slot and eight games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. The middle of May has arrived. There’s plenty of time to catch up. Mattingly has the attention of the locker room, which is important in MLB these days, regardless of how the season turns out.
