At the MLB trade deadline in 2026, the Philadelphia Phillies are in desperate need of improvements. Both Dave Dombrowski and Bryce Harper are aware that the team needs assistance.
Dombrowski has to improve in the outfield, bullpen, and rotation. The outfield market is the most worrisome of those three markets. There aren’t many options, and the ones that are are unappealing.
However, the Phillies are reportedly interested in Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho, who won a Gold Glove for $10.75 million, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.
“Daulton Varsho is among players who interest Phillies,” Heyman says. “Philly seeks an OF, pen and a starter.”
Fans of the Phillies shouldn’t be surprised by Heyman’s claim because Varsho has been frequently connected to the team in the weeks preceding the trade deadline.
Naturally, the fact that Varsho is not a right-handed batting outfielder would be his one weakness. Despite being a lefty slugger, he has some fascinating potential that the Phillies may justifiably have faith in.
Varsho has a poor batting average of.247 with a.691 OPS and an 88 OPS+ in 96 games and 324 at-bats this season. However, he demonstrated his ability to go on a hot stretch last season with an OPS of.833 and 20 home runs in 248 at-bats.
The 29-year-old has a.721 OPS during his major league career in addition to some excellent center field defensive outs. He might take Justin Crawford’s spot full-time. Crawford could be a crucial trade piece to get an upgrade elsewhere on the squad this summer.
Varsho is a left-handed hitter and a rental possibility, so adding him would require some additional moving parts. However, the Phillies are apparently interested in acquiring him since he is an improvement over their present choices.
It wouldn’t be shocking if the Blue Jays and Phillies agreed to a deal by the August 3 deadline because there has been a lot of talk between the two teams lately.
