The New York Mets are having a terrific start to the season, and it’s with the aid of Pete Alonso and his outstanding play. It’s a common misconception in Major League Baseball that first basemen in their 30s begin to deteriorate, but Alonso is proving that’s not the case.
Scott Boras, Alonso’s agent, recently discussed his client’s performance and had to inform the public that, despite the league, he is one of the league’s top first basemen.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Boras stated, “Stop thinking that first basemen who are 30 years of age or older are in their decline.” In actuality, only five or six first basemen in their 30s are capable of accomplishing what Pete is doing, and they may still be really important.
It’s rare to find these men hitting in the middle of their lineup. M.V., or managerial value, is, in my opinion, the best measure in sports. You can tell how valuable a player is when a manager starts you in the center of the lineup for the whole season. You have the highest chance of winning with him. In New York, Pete is also doing it. You are observing a highly skilled individual.
Although experts have previously expressed their belief that Alonso will regress at some point this season, given his current play, it doesn’t appear likely to happen anytime soon. Alonso is tied for 12th place in the MLB with nine home runs and a.322 batting average this season.
The Mets will be very successful this season and have a decent chance of making it to the deep postseason if Alonso keeps playing this well. Even if that’s a long way off, the Mets will need to remain consistent without Alonso. They have the team to do so, and their early-season actions shouldn’t come as a surprise.
