Former Missouri forward delivered a painful blow to Tiger fans over the weekend, officially closing the chapter on his time with the program by committing to Kentucky basketball. Mitchell won his legal battle in Kentucky on Friday, earning a fifth year of eligibility and the opportunity to enter the transfer portal. Just one day later, he announced his decision to join the Wildcats.
The move immediately sparked a strong reaction among Missouri supporters on social media, with emotions ranging from disappointment to anger.
During his final appearance at Mizzou Arena, Mitchell became emotional while discussing what his time at Missouri meant to him. Many fans responded by calling him a “true son,” a fitting tribute to a player who led the Tigers in scoring while helping guide the program to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances after Missouri endured a winless SEC season.

Off the top of my head, it’s difficult to think of another player in the country who could receive a standing ovation from 16% of a fanbase while simultaneously being booed by 36% of that same crowd. Still, the divided reaction to Mark Mitchell’s departure is understandable. His exit from Missouri is an unusual situation, and, at least publicly, there doesn’t appear to have been any significant bad blood between Mitchell and the program.
The fact that “Upset but understand” received the most support in the poll is hardly surprising. Mitchell’s departure wasn’t entirely within his control, and it didn’t appear that transferring to another college was his original plan. After testing the NBA waters, Mitchell learned that he had an opportunity to return to college for another season.
Kentucky, unlike Missouri, had an available roster spot late in the offseason and reportedly had the financial resources to present Mitchell with a significant deal for the upcoming season. In the current era of college basketball, elite players like Mitchell have the opportunity to earn life-changing money through name, image and likeness opportunities.
That context is worth considering when evaluating his decision.
It’s also worth remembering that social media polls don’t necessarily represent an entire fanbase. Mitchell’s eventual reception at Mizzou Arena could look very different from what the current poll and online reactions suggest.
There are still more than four months before Mitchell is scheduled to return to Columbia. Plenty can happen between now and then, including new comments from Mitchell, Missouri fans or others involved in the situation. Additional details about his departure could also emerge and potentially change how supporters view the entire transfer saga.
