For the first time since being hired in April, Michael Malone has officially addressed the media, offering his first real public update on the current state of the UNC basketball program.
Five months into his tenure, Malone’s attention has increasingly shifted toward the 2026-27 season and preparing his revamped roster for the beginning of a new chapter in Carolina basketball. Recruiting, fundraising and the many other responsibilities that come with running a program remain important, but with the season quickly approaching, the focus is now on getting the Tar Heels ready for what promises to be a demanding schedule.
One of the biggest unresolved questions surrounding this year’s team involves Cameron Fens and his eligibility. Fens was a late addition to UNC’s roster and is among the players seeking a potential fifth season of eligibility. However, the ongoing legal battle involving the NCAA means his situation remains uncertain.
Naturally, Malone was asked about the latest developments. His response was measured and largely what you would expect from a head coach dealing with an unresolved eligibility case.
Michael Malone gives Cameron Fens an eligibility update
During his conversation with reporters, Malone provided some clarity on what Fens is currently allowed to do.
“He’s eligible to work out in practice and condition… He is cleared to practice and play and be a part of this team. But the process is ongoing. He obviously couldn’t play in a game if they had one today.”
Malone also made it clear that he is simply happy to have Fens around the program, adding, “I’m just thrilled that Cameron is a part of this team.”
For the time being, Fens cannot participate in an official regular-season game, but he is permitted to practice, work out and condition alongside his teammates. That gives UNC an opportunity to prepare him while the eligibility process continues.
Unfortunately for the Tar Heels, there isn’t much they can do to control the situation. The program’s best option is to prepare as though Fens could eventually become available while also making sure the rest of the roster is ready to handle the season without him if necessary.
If Fens ultimately isn’t granted eligibility, UNC would have to adjust its plans and rely on the players who are cleared to compete.
An unprecedented situation for college basketball
The circumstances surrounding Fens’ case are part of a larger situation that college basketball has never really dealt with before. With players pursuing additional seasons of eligibility and the NCAA facing legal challenges, there remains considerable uncertainty about how these cases will ultimately be resolved.
For now, the best-case scenario for UNC is that the matter is settled as quickly as possible, regardless of the final decision. That would give the Tar Heels—and other programs dealing with similar cases—enough time to properly prepare for the upcoming season.
Malone’s approach appears to be the most practical one at this stage. Until a final ruling is made, UNC can only continue preparing, keep Fens involved with the team and hope that he receives clearance to compete when the season begins.
The biggest positive for the Tar Heels is that Fens is currently allowed to participate in team activities. That could prove extremely valuable. If the final decision eventually goes in favor of players seeking an additional year of eligibility, Fens will already have been practicing and conditioning with the team rather than having to suddenly catch up after being kept away from team activities.
For now, UNC is simply waiting—and preparing for every possible outcome.
