The Philadelphia Phillies have already gotten valuable contributions from several of their highly regarded young players this season. Justin Crawford and Andrew Painter have both reached the major leagues and established themselves as important pieces as Philadelphia continues its push for another National League East championship.
Because the Phillies’ farm system is heavily concentrated at the top, the organization does not have an overwhelming amount of prospect depth. Still, Crawford and Painter were widely expected to reach the majors in 2026 following impressive minor league performances in 2025.
Painter’s path to the big leagues became even clearer while Zack Wheeler recovered from thoracic outlet decompression surgery. Crawford, meanwhile, was viewed as a strong candidate for promotion after Philadelphia moved on from veteran center fielder Harrison Bader.
However, another highly touted Phillies prospect has taken a completely different path this season.
Aidan Miller’s Season Remains on Hold
Top infield prospect Aidan Miller has yet to appear in a game in 2026 because of a lingering back issue, creating considerable frustration for both the player and Phillies fans.
Miller suffered a significant setback earlier this year when Philadelphia revealed that he was dealing with discogenic pain and facet inflammation in his lower back. The condition required a procedure and forced him to begin another lengthy rehabilitation process.
At the time, the Phillies expected Miller to resume baseball activities within roughly six to eight weeks. The injury had already prevented him from participating in Grapefruit League games and delayed what was expected to be his first full season playing at the Triple-A level.
With the procedure now more than two months in the past, there had been hope that Philadelphia would provide a more encouraging update regarding the young infielder.
Instead, the latest comments remain frustratingly vague.
Phillies Give Short Update on Miller
Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski recently provided only a brief update when asked about Miller’s recovery.
“Continuing to progress,” Dombrowski said, according to reporting from The Athletic.
While those words are technically positive, they offer little indication that Miller is close to returning to game action. The Phillies have not provided a definitive timetable for his return, leaving his status uncertain as the 2026 season moves deeper into its final stages.
That is particularly disappointing because Miller was expected to be part of Philadelphia’s next wave of young talent.
Crawford has already given the club another athletic option in the outfield, while Painter has overcome early struggles and provided valuable innings for the pitching staff. Miller was expected to follow a similar path and potentially become one of the organization’s next major contributors.
Instead, his development has effectively been paused.
For now, the Phillies will have to wait for Miller to make further progress before determining when their highly rated shortstop prospect can finally get his 2026 campaign underway.
