The Los Angeles Angels are once again making major changes as their disastrous 2026 season continues to unravel.
Los Angeles dropped its seventh consecutive game Sunday, falling 5-2 to the Philadelphia Phillies and completing a three-game sweep at home. The latest defeat extended one of the club’s worst stretches of the season and added even more pressure to an organization already undergoing significant changes.
The Angels’ latest losing streak comes after the organization made a major coaching shake-up earlier this month. On Aug. 11, Los Angeles fired pitching coach Mike Maddux, assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott and bullpen coach Dom Chiti. Interim general manager John Mozeliak pointed to concerns about the team’s inconsistent use of technology and analytics in its pitching development.
At the time of those dismissals, the Angels owned MLB’s worst record at 45-74. Their pitching staff had posted a 4.51 ERA, ranked among the worst in baseball, while also leading the majors in walks.
The situation has not improved enough since then.
The Angels entered Sunday’s finale desperate to stop the bleeding but instead watched Philadelphia complete the sweep. Zack Wheeler held Los Angeles to one run over six innings, while Edmundo Sosa and J.T. Realmuto provided the offensive damage for the Phillies. Mike Trout’s RBI double in the ninth was not enough to rescue the Angels.
The losing streak had already reached six games after Philadelphia’s extra-inning victory Saturday. Los Angeles managed only four hits in that 4-2 defeat despite Zach Neto’s game-tying home run in the eighth inning.
The Angels are now facing questions about how much further the organization’s overhaul will go.
Manager Kurt Suzuki remains in the middle of a difficult first season, while Mozeliak has already demonstrated that he is willing to make significant changes. The Angels also fired general manager Perry Minasian earlier in the season as the franchise began reshaping its baseball operations.
With the team struggling to find consistency on both sides of the ball, another coaching change cannot be ruled out if the losses continue.
For an Angels organization desperate to end a lengthy postseason drought, the latest skid is another reminder that major work remains ahead. The immediate challenge is stopping the losing streak before it grows into an even bigger problem.
And with the Yankees coming to Anaheim next, the Angels have little time to find answers.
