According to reports in Portugal, Newcastle United are set to sign Sporting defender Gonçalo Inácio in January.

As the Record reports today about the centre-back’s future, the Lions are awaiting a bid for his departure.

Sporting do not want to lose the player in the middle of the season, although some attempts are expected in the January transfer window.

Despite recent speculation linking Inácio to Real Madrid, Newcastle are thought to be the ‘best positioned’ club in the competition.

According to the record, the Magpies have been making ‘regular’ surveillance over the last year and are particularly interested in Inácio.
Sporting have set a firm price for the defender, as they will only let him go if his €60 million release clause is met.
Newcastle, given their reported interest, are most likely well aware of this. They should also be aware that other Premier League clubs may compete for his signature.

Holding on to the clause is all Sporting can do right now, so the Magpies shouldn’t even bother giving less than the fixed price.
