Despite widespread interest, SAINTS manager Russell Martin has stated that the likelihood of making Ryan Fraser’s stay permanent this month is slim.

The 29-year-old netted his fifth and sixth goals of the season in Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup third-round triumph over Walsall.

It was the first time Fraser had played 90 minutes in a Saints shirt since joining on a season-long loan from Newcastle United this summer.

Both Fraser and Martin want to extend the Scotland international’s contract, but the manager admits it is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

When asked if Fraser’s loan could be made permanent this month, Martin replied, “I don’t know, it’s really outside of my remit.”

“Do you want me to make it permanent?” Yes. Because of the resources involved, the timing, and his condition, I believe the likelihood of that happening is low.

“I don’t know if it will be feasible right now but he just needs to keep doing what he is doing, he is in a really good place and enjoying it.”

The manager went on to say: “We will see but I am pretty sure he would love to stay here beyond this season.”

Southampton’s January expenditure is already restricted due to financial fair play restrictions, making any investment on Fraser likely superfluous.

Saints can review their predicament in May because the winger is already at St Mary’s till the end of the season.

Fraser has become a fan favorite for his replacement efforts, but after scoring his first goals as a starter, he now has the opportunity to play 90 minutes.
Martin thinks that Sam Edozie’s ankle injury, which will keep him out until February, puts Fraser “in the frame” to start.

“I don’t know if he’ll be my left winger for the next few weeks because you never know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” the manager added.

“But we believe he can keep going because he is a really fit boy who just keeps running – he is a great example to all of our wide players.”

“Keep running all the time because it is so worth it.”
