The New York Mets ultimately made the moves they felt were necessary at the MLB trade deadline, even if the situation wasn’t expected to unfold this way earlier in the season.

While it’s disappointing how things have played out for New York, it reflects the tough reality of what the year has become. By parting ways with Luke Weaver and other bullpen pieces, the Mets have clearly created a gap that must be addressed moving forward.

For a team that relies heavily on its bullpen to compete at a high level—especially with postseason aspirations—there’s no question that changes are needed.

Addressing reporters, David Stearns acknowledged the issue and emphasized that it will likely need to be resolved in the offseason, offering Mets fans some reassurance that improvements are on the horizon.

“We’re going to need to be aggressive in adding relievers this offseason, exploring different avenues to build our bullpen into what we expect it to be by 2027,” he said, via SNY.

“We’re also encouraged by some of the pitchers currently in our bullpen who will have opportunities moving forward. We believe they can step up and perform at a high level.”

With the Mets having moved on from most of their key contributors—aside from Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto—the remainder of the season should essentially serve as an extended evaluation period. It’s a chance for the organization to assess talent across the bullpen, lineup, and starting rotation.

There’s clearly plenty of work ahead, and the only path forward is either bringing in established major league talent or giving emerging players the opportunity to prove themselves.
