The turning point came with two outs in the bottom of the inning, when Toronto’s Nathan Lukes battled Shugart to a full count, continuing the reliever’s recent struggles. Lukes then delivered the decisive moment, launching a two-run homer to right field on a 3-2 sweeper to secure a 7-5 victory for Toronto, as reported by Aaron Bracy of The Morning Call.
Phillies manager Don Mattingly may have preferred to hold new trade acquisition Brooks Raley for a late-inning situation, but instead turned to him earlier in the game. That decision left Chase Shugart—who has mostly been used in low-leverage roles this season—to handle a critical moment, as the bullpen was running thin with the team pushing for a win against the Blue Jays.
On Sunday, the Phillies removed Shugart from their 40-man roster and optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, according to the team’s official transaction log.

As the Phillies continue their search for a dependable setup option ahead of closer Jhoan Duran, the club used Shugart’s vacated roster spot to make a change before the series finale.
According to CBS Sports, Shugart was replaced by right-hander Alan Rangel, who was recalled from Triple-A in the corresponding move. Across two stints in the majors this season, Shugart posted a 4.93 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 38.1 innings, with most of his work coming in low-leverage situations.
With a Wild Card berth still up for grabs, the Phillies have clear bullpen concerns to address. If Shugart earns another opportunity, Mattingly will likely look to limit him to lower-pressure roles moving forward.
