The New York Mets are set to wrap up their three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field on Thursday.
New York enters the finale looking to bounce back after suffering an 8-1 defeat on Wednesday. With the series currently tied at 1-1, Thursday’s winner will walk away with the series victory.
The Mets are still playing without star outfielder Juan Soto, who has been sidelined since July 24 due to an injury.
However, New York delivered an encouraging update on Soto’s recovery Wednesday.
MLB.com reported that Soto participated in live batting practice for the first time on Aug. 26. He also played catch and ran the bases without experiencing any issues. The report added that Soto even made several quick stops while rounding the bases, another positive sign in his recovery.
Soto remains expected to return at some point next month.
Chelsea Janes provided additional insight into Soto’s progress on Aug. 26, reporting that the Mets star was hitting against a live pitcher at Citi Field. Janes noted that Sept. 1 had been mentioned as a tentative target for Soto’s return, although the team has remained cautious about putting a firm timetable on his comeback.
With Soto already facing live pitching, however, it appears the Mets superstar is getting closer to rejoining the lineup.
Soto has been one of the Mets’ most productive players when healthy this season, batting .283 with 83 hits, 21 home runs, 52 RBIs, 46 runs scored and seven stolen bases across 84 games.
He is currently in his second season with New York after joining the Mets following his time with the Yankees. Before that, Soto also played for the San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals.
Soto played an important role in Washington’s championship run, helping the Nationals capture the 2019 World Series.
Looking at the Mets Right Now
The 2026 campaign has been a difficult one for New York.
The Mets currently sit at the bottom of the National League East with a 60-73 record through 133 games. Still, they have shown some recent signs of life, going 6-4 over their last 10 games.
New York has also posted a 31-36 record in 67 games at Citi Field this season.
After finishing their series against Milwaukee, the Mets will stay home for another matchup at Citi Field. They are scheduled to open a series against Jose Altuve and the Houston Astros on Friday night.
