The Los Angeles Angels could be preparing for a more ambitious offseason as the franchise looks to strengthen its roster ahead of the 2027 MLB campaign, with New York Yankees star emerging as a potential target.

For years, the Angels have rarely committed significant money to elite free agents under owner Arte Moreno and general manager Perry Minasian. However, with a potential ownership transition involving Stan Kroenke and John Mozeliak currently overseeing baseball operations, the franchise could have an opportunity to take a different approach this winter.

Although the upcoming free-agent market may not be particularly strong, there are still players capable of making an immediate difference for a team looking to become more competitive. Chisholm could be one of the most intriguing options available.

The Yankees second baseman is approaching free agency ahead of his age-29 season, and uncertainty surrounding his future in New York could open the door for interested teams.

Manager Aaron Boone benched Chisholm on multiple occasions during the Yankees’ 2026 postseason run, raising further questions about whether the two sides will continue their relationship beyond this season.

Given Chisholm’s competitive personality, the situation could influence his decision as he considers his next destination.

The Angels have several areas to address, and Chisholm’s combination of power, speed, and defensive versatility could make him an attractive acquisition.

The Bahamian infielder is among baseball’s most dangerous players when it comes to combining home-run power with base-stealing ability. Across the last three seasons, he has recorded at least 70 home runs and 100 stolen bases, placing him in an exclusive group of players who can influence games in multiple ways.

His defensive contributions also strengthen his appeal. Chisholm recorded eight Fielding Run Value this season, ranking among the top 10 second basemen in that category.

Adding a player with those qualities would give Los Angeles another established talent capable of contributing immediately rather than relying exclusively on prospects to improve the roster.

There could also be concerns about how his arrival would affect the development of young infielder Christian Moore. However, Chisholm’s versatility means the Angels would not necessarily have to restrict him to second base.

He divided his time between second and third base with the Yankees in 2025 and previously played regularly in center field for the Miami Marlins before his 2024 trade to New York.

That flexibility could become particularly useful if Mike Trout moves to a corner outfield position, as he has reportedly expressed interest in doing for 2027.

Chisholm could initially fill the center-field vacancy before potentially returning to the infield later in his career. Such a plan would allow the Angels to improve their major-league roster while retaining flexibility around their younger players.

Angels urged to invest in established talent.

For Los Angeles, the bigger challenge is building a roster capable of competing consistently rather than depending on young players to solve every problem.

Developing prospects remains essential to a successful organization, but relying too heavily on inexperienced players can create problems when those prospects fail to reach their expected potential.

The Angels need a better balance between homegrown talent and proven major-league performers, particularly if they want to make meaningful progress in the American League.

Chisholm would offer an opportunity to address that need, bringing an established offensive threat, speed on the bases, and defensive versatility to the lineup.

A potential ownership change could also influence the club’s financial ambitions, although there is no guarantee that the Angels will pursue Chisholm or significantly increase their spending this offseason.

Nevertheless, if the franchise is serious about building a more competitive team for 2027, pursuing a player of his caliber would represent an encouraging step.

The Angels have plenty of work to do, but signing Chisholm could give them an important building block as they attempt to turn their fortunes around.
