Ally McCoist has questioned whether Leeds United and Ipswich would desire Southampton to defeat Leicester in their match at the King Power on April 23.

Leeds’ 4-3 victory over Middlesbrough at the Riverside moved them back over Ipswich to second place in the table, one point behind Leicester and six clear of Southampton.

A win for the Saints would allow them to gain ground and apply pressure from behind, making the title more attainable, but a loss would relieve pressure on Leeds but leave the crown practically out of reach.

McCoist told talkSPORT [23 April, 06:14] that Ipswich is currently a point behind Leeds, who are a point below Leicester.

“It appears that Southampton will be more than capable of winning at Leicester, but they dropped three points at Cardiff.

“Here’s a fascinating topic for Leeds and Ipswich; I’m curious what they want tonight. I’m curious if Leeds and Ipswich want Southampton to win today, or if they just want Southampton out of the picture and accept it’s a struggle between the two of them.

Leeds United promotion bid continues v Middlesbrough

Leeds will undoubtedly be hoping Leicester are the one to mess up at the King Power Stadium, despite the likelihood of pressure from Southampton.

Aside from a shock defeat against Cardiff, the Saints’ previous record had put them back in contention for automatic promotion, but their defeat against the Bluebirds, while Leeds overcame Boro, appears to have knocked them out.

Even if they win against Leicester, they will still be three points behind Daniel Farke’s side with only two games remaining and a worse goal difference, and considering Leeds’ run, it will be difficult for them to overtake the Whites.

If Leicester wins, they will go four points ahead with two games to go and almost certainly win the title, leaving only the second automatic promotion spot for Leeds and Ipswich to compete for, adding to the suspense.
