Malone M

It was only in the last few days that the link became apparent, but it quickly became a match.

Four-star forward and former LSU commit, has committed to UNC basketball coach Michael Malone. The news was first reported by Joe Tipton of On3, and this announcement coincides with Thomas’s official visit to Chapel Hill.

Since Thomas wasn’t necessarily on North Carolina’s radar during his initial recruitment process, this was a low-key development. But now that he has committed to the Tar Heels, Michael Malone and his staff see him as a long-term asset to the team and want to realize his full potential.

All indications suggested that this pairing might actually occur as his visit to campus drew near. This made sense for both parties because North Carolina wanted to add some more elite players to its roster for the 2026–2027 season, and Thomas was searching for a new home after LSU’s coaching change.

At No. 94 overall in Rivals’ rankings, Thomas may not be the best player in his class among the top 100, but if everything goes according to plan, this addition might be a huge deal.

Many former athletes who weren’t elite prospects but became stars after moving to Chapel Hill are well-known to Tar Heel supporters. Thomas has the potential to become a member of that group of athletes.

As a twitchy athlete, Kevin Thomas performed best when going downward during transition. Although he had some moments in the half-court, he still needs to improve his ability to make plays off movement. He has potential as a defender and some interesting long-term characteristics.On3’s Jamie Shaw

Together with combo guard Malloy Smith and five-stars Maximo Adams and Sayon Keita, Thomas is the fourth freshman addition in this recruitment class. The coaching staff still has some leeway on the roster because it’s likely that at least one or two more players will be added in the coming weeks.
